BODY POSITIVITY IS ONLY PART OF THE PICTURE // Radical self-love means taking care of your body in ALL ways — sometimes that means releasing excess weight, so you can live your best life, slay in your business and show up for the people you love.

Hey there, thanks for joining me today for another episode of WELLthy Wednesday. Last week we wrapped up a 4-part series on brain fog, so if you missed it, definitely go back and check it out.

If you’re new here, I’m Michelle, and I help women align health with their hustle, so they can show up for LIFE using a combination of functional medicine, naturopathic medicine and traditional Chinese philosophy.

For the next few episodes, we’re going to be chatting about metabolism, because there’s a crazy amount of misinformation out there, and I know there are a lot of women who are wanting to release 20-30 pounds or more… AND I’m going to be teach you how you can reach those goals in just 6 weeks using a safe and holistic approach.

Now, if you’ve been following the body positivity movement, you might be wondering why on earth I’m talking about body positivity and weight loss in the same video, let alone the same sentence.

And the reason is because the basic ideals of body positivity are not bad — women shouldn’t be mistreated because of their weight, and none of us should ever feel pressured to fit OUR bodies into some ideal mold of “thinness.”

For most of us, it’s not even possible — let alone remotely healthy. And, of course, we should ALL learn to love ourselves, whether we’re a size 4 or size 24, okay?

The thing is, unconditional body positivity can be an unrealistic expectation – women, in general, struggle to ‘love their bodies.’ For most women, especially those who have struggled with body image issues, it’s really hard to suddenly shift from body-hatred to genuinely LOVING the way they look and being enthusiastic about it.

SO, that being said, a good first step, is that you can start feeling neutral, or accepting, the way you look while on your healing journey. Shifting your mindset from “I have to lose weight” or “I’ll never be thin” or “my body is just jacked up” isn’t going to help you and is for SURE not in the realm of loving your body.

So, if you’re on board with the body positivity movement, which I am — BUT you’re still wanting to lose, or more accurately RELEASE, excess weight — there’s no need to be ashamed of that want or desire.

Wanting to release weight, does NOT mean that you don’t love your body.

Quite the opposite, actually.

Whether you’re wanting to release 10 pounds or 100 pounds, it’s the mindset and motivation behind it that TRULY matters — do it because you LOVE your body, not because you hate it.

Your body has gotten you through so many years of life and times of hardship, and it’s the only body you’re ever going to have.  LOVE it, don’t hate it.

This type of body positivity means looking in the mirror and maybe not being stoked on what you see, but being able to step back and realize that that’s okay, AND that you’re taking responsibility and ownership of your life, because YOU have the ability to consciously treat your body better, nourish it with the foods it needs, and allow it to do what it does best — which is heal!

So, body positivity isn’t enough, because it doesn’t address the health aspect. Some body-positivity activists insist that weight has nothing to do with your health, but that just isn’t true. Period.

That stubborn belly fat — also known as central obesity — is the number one factor associated with diabetes, high blood pressure, and infertility.

Weight loss isn’t about being “skinny” — it’s about living your best life for as long as you can, because health is your foundation and your ceiling.

Body positivity isn’t enough, because it’s not addressing ALL of you — it’s only addressing how you perceive your outward appearance — AND, how shaky is that?

We all have bad days!

If you’re not cherishing your body, and actively working on feeling better by giving your body what it truly needs, then it’s way too easy to get derailed, and then, all of a sudden, you’re deep in those negative thought patterns and body hatred, right?

TRUE body positivity means you can do whatever you want with your body as long as you do it with love. Release excess weight because you LOVE your body, not because you hate it.

Is that all making sense? If you agree, leave me a comment — even if you don’t agree, leave me a comment.

Another thing I want to share with you today is the KEY thing that you need to know about releasing excess weight and keeping it off…

You need to EAT FOOD.

If you don’t eat, or you restrict your calorie intake too much, you’re body basically goes into panic mode — survival mode.

So what happens with typical “diets” is that your body goes into what’s called an anti-catabolic state, where your body starts to burn your good and healthy fats, the fats that you need for your brain and nervous system.

So these GOOD fats are burned up, and then you plateau, which is typically when you decide to double down on your efforts — less calories… more working out, right?

You end up restricting more and exercising more. This combo pushes you into a more stressed catabolic state, where you end up breaking down muscle and actually storing fat, so your body literally goes from a fat burning to a fat storing state.

And the fat stored during this phase is what’s called “abnormal” fat, which our body literally hides and tucks away for use under the most extreme circumstances — think zombie apocalypse.

So, just to clarify, there are 3 main types of fat in the body:

(1) the good fats that the body uses for energy

(2) the good fats that are used for organs and tissues and then

(3) “abnormal fat”, sometimes called visceral adipose tissue, or VAT.

Again, this all goes back to stress. When our body is stressed out, it has no idea what’s going to happen, so it’s basically planning ahead for a rainy day — our body is in full PREPPER mode — again, it’s getting ready for the zombie apocalypse.

But seriously, you can starve yourself for like three weeks, and still not use up your abnormal fat stores — it’s THAT stubborn.

So, that’s the point where your weight plateaus or you even start gaining weight back  — and it’s SUPER frustrating.

If you’ve tried typical diets before, you usually just stop and end up going back to what you were doing before — because you haven’t actually learned any new information or gained any insight into what your body actually needs to be nourished — and even with what you were doing before, you might STILL be gaining weight because your metabolism slowed down during that state of panic.

UGH!!! Right?!

Is ANY of this ringing true for you?

So, to put it another way, if you lost weight on a diet, but your body didn’t feel SAFE at that new weight — because on a physiological level, it was in fear and panic mode — you weren’t able to establish a NEW metabolic set point, and set points are KEY for maintaining that new weight.

The whole focus of my program, Your Metabolic RESET, is to help you release excess weight while creating a state of comfort and safety in your body, so your body realizes that it’s OKAY to remain at your new weight.

Does that make sense?

There’s no weight loss stimulants, packaged foods, weird shakes or anything like that. We eat real whole foods and use some targeted nutrients to help with hormone balance, detox and digestive health while learning lifelong skills that will serve you for a lifetime.

Early-bird enrollment for Your Metabolic RESET is now OPEN, until June 12th, so grab your spot NOW and save $500!

So, in summary:

  1. Wanting to release excess weight, does NOT mean that you don’t love your body — so release any shame or guilt about that right now — do it because you love your body, not because you hate it.
  2. Weight loss isn’t about being “skinny” — it’s about living your best life for as long as you can, because health is your foundation and your ceiling.
  3. The only way to release excess weight and keep it off is to nourish your body and create a state of safety instead of survival — this helps you create your new metabolic set point.
